Electric Daisy Carnival Survival Guide

electric daisy carnival 2012

Insomniac’s Electric Daisy Carnival is one of the most hotly anticipated events of the year for the EDM community. Being America’s biggest electronic festival has set the bar pretty high for the event and it never fails to impress.

It is not only the festival but the “EDC Week” leading up to it that adds to the fun and excitement with literally dozens of pool parties and club events for those who can’t get enough. If you haven’t gotten an opportunity to experience the madness that is EDC, put it on your bucket list. It must be seen to be believed.

Headliners at the festival this year include, Afrojack, Alesso, Armin Van Buuren, Avicii, Bassjackers, Calvin Harris, Dada Life, David Guetta, Fedde Le Grand, Hardwell, Kaskade, Knife Party, Laidback Luke, Martin Solveig, Morgan Page, NERVO, Nicky Romero, Porter Robinson, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, Tiesto, and Tommy Trash, just to name a few. With a few stages and hundreds of acts there will not be a dull moment.

For you EDC virgins, HMOD has put together a survival guide so you can get the most out of your experience.

#1 Make A Plan

With so many acts on so many stages it’s beyond helpful to have some idea of who you want to see and when and where they are playing. Stick with who you want to see even if that means you have to venture out on your own. I guarantee you will be rewarded by making friends at whatever stage you end up at as well as getting to see what could be your new favorite act.

Losing your friends and getting separated from the herd is an inevitability and unless you want to attach yourself to a leash I highly advise making a plan on where to meet when you get separated. Cell service can be a little shoddy especially with texts messages so plan to meet at a specific place at a specific time.

#2 Dress Up

Electric Daisy Carnival Outfit

If you are the type of person who refers to EDC as “an electronic dance music festival” when you really know it’s a rave, then perhaps this commandment isn’t for you. If you are into embracing some new experiences then I highly encourage you to dust off your imagination cap and get started on a costume, or three, that will have people high-fiving you all weekend.

Girls, this is your opportunity to express your inner stripper. Nothing is off limits at EDC. Pasties, G-strings, wings, crazy makeup, mile-long eyelashes, go for it! If at any point you have a moment of “oh god! I can’t wear this little clothing out!” Fear not because I guarantee someone will be more naked than you.

Guys, if you ever felt like you wanted to wear makeup or a grape smuggler out into public without fear of judgement…this is your weekend. The bottom-line is that it is way more fun to get dress up than to go in jeans and a t-shirt. Join in the craziness!

#3 EAT….A LOT

epic meal time

You will, no doubt, be dancing like a crazed fool for hours until the sun comes up. I don’t think food crossed my mind once, nor was I even aware that food was available at the Speedway. There is way too much music happening at every moment to be slowed down by eating. And while nibbling from a plate of magic brownies all day might seem like an appropriate nutrition plan for the weekend, please be assured it is not.

Carbo-loading like a truck driver prepping for a marathon is a more realistic food strategy, it also helps put you into a food coma. Forced sleep can be your friend too.

#4 DRINK WATER

Do I even need to say it at this point guys? In case it needs repeating, DRINK WATER!! It goes without saying that Vegas is hotter than hell. If walking out of the casino inspires sweat to pour out of you then just think of what a marathon of dancing will do to your electrolytes.

Hydrate all day and hydrate all night. The free water refill station are a literal lifesaver so take advantage of them and take care of yourself.

#5 Make Time For Rides and Art

edc art and rides

EDC may be known for the music but “carnival” is still in the title. The lines might be long but it is definitely worth the wait to ride the Ferris wheel or take a walk through a fun house. Not only does it give you a birds-eye view of the festival (which is incomparable) but even the most diehard music fan can use a break from the madness.

Take a second to look up because the fireworks last year were impressive to say the least and if you think you are seeing UFOs its probably parachutes outfitted with LED light suits. The art installations are also good for a photo op. Some of the highlights from last year were giant water misting daisies and a giant dragon that was wheeled around the speedway by bicycle. The art enhances the musical experience even more so take advantage of it.

#6 Stick It Out

edc stick it out

Sunday will sneak up on you faster than you ever thought possible. Especially when you get back to the hotel at 9am on Sunday morning. Suppress your hysterical inner child who is whining about being tired. You might have a thought cross your mind that whispers, “just drive home, doesn’t your own bed sound so good?” You might think, “why yes it does!” Let me tell you first hand that it is not a good idea.

You will kick yourself in the ass, maybe not right away, but at 10:00pm, when your umpteenth wind of energy hits and you are staring sleeplessly at your ceiling thinking about the acts that you could be seeing you will feel it. “It” being the saddest feeling of regret at the realization that you are the biggest pussy ever. EDC can be a once in a lifetime experience and you shouldn’t hesitate to experience ALL of it.

Cheers to an epic adventure at EDC 2012!! Have fun and be safe!!
