If you haven’t heard of Skrillex the only acceptable excuse is that you have been in Africa for the Peace Corps for the past year. Aside from being in a desolate field on another continent you have no excuse. Sonny Moore, more widely know as Skrillex, is THE super-producer of the moment. His consistent output of amazing, revolutionary, and genre-crossing music is what is making him an icon in the EDM world. With his five-grammy nominations including one for best new artist (the first DJ to ever receive this nomination) the rest of the world is beginning to take notice as well.
Skrillex has always been musically inclined, having been in successful bands prior to his explosion on the EDM scene. This talent has worked to transform his music from mere tracks to multi-faceted songs that go beyond the stereotypes of dance music. Not content to be pigeon-holed as a dubstep artist, Skrillex has crossed boundaries by producing tracks like the super hard electro-house “Zoology,” with Knife Party, which tiptoed into the genre of moombahton and “Lick It” with Kaskade which was a departure from his dubstep sound but stayed true to his style. In a departure from the EDM world he recently produced three tracks off of hard-rock band Korn’s album, “The Path of Totality.”
His original productions like “Scary Monster and Nice Sprites,” “First of the Year (Equinox)” and “Kill Everybody” have millions upon millions of views on YouTube and his remixes are equally impressive. Skrillex has done remixes of popular tracks like La Roux’s “Bulletproof,” Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” and the song of 2011, Benny Benassi’s “Cinema.” If that hasn’t kept him busy enough Skrillex has launched his own label, OWSLA, which has already successfully catapulted newcomer Porter Robinson. His collaborative spirit and down-to-earth-ness is what fans love and other producers respect and we can only hope that this is the tip of the iceberg in what he has to offer.
